How to Make the Perfect Blog for Your Freelance Business



Anybody's freelance business should include a blog as a form of marketing. Here are some tips to help you create the perfect blog to promote your services.


With almost everybody and their mother running a blog today, it is hard to gain the exposure that you need to receive more clients and followers. There are over 300 million different blogs with almost any category imaginable. This can make it hard to stand out and gain a loyal following, but do not worry it isn’t impossible. I am going to help you create and promote a blog that will ultimately benefit your freelancing business in a whole.  

Choosing Your Blogging Platform

There are two major websites, Wordpress.com and Blogger.com, which you can visit to start the creation of your blog. Both of these websites enable anybody to operate a blog because its service is free. Choosing between the two can be difficult though.

Wordpress.com has a large amount of customization available, but is not really user friendly. I would suggest passing on this website if you are not very tech-savvy.

Blogger.com on the other hand has an easy to use interface and can have your blog up and running, being monetized with Google Adsense, in just a few short hours. With Wordpress you are not allowed to monetize your website unless you buy a premium account.

Make your choice wisely. I would suggest viewing blogs that are created by both websites to see which style you like the best. This is usually the only way that people can make the choice for themselves.

What to Include

Most freelancers do not know what to include in their personal blog, simply because they have never seen or created a blog before. You have to remember this is for your business so you must ultimately promote it throughout your blog. Here are what pages should be included: Services, Biography, Contact, Portfolio, and Testimonials. Each of these pages has their own significance.

Services – Your services page should include exactly what you are bringing to the table and offering potential clients. This is where you write the prices for specific work that you may do, and a short description of what they will receive.

Biography – This is where you include a history of whatever freelance job you are doing, whether it is web design, or writing, and how it has been incorporated in your life.

Contact – Include all of your contact information, such as your phone number, email, and social networks that you may belong to.

Portfolio – Possibly one of the most important pages on your blog; the portfolio is used to show off your work. Put together some of your best samples and paste them onto the page for potential clients to view.

Testimonials – Put any positive testimonials that you may have received so that prospecting clients can see if others have liked your work. This can attract clients because people like to know if someone is worth the money.

Main Blog

The main blog of your personal freelancing website is solely based on your decision of what you want to write. Whatever you enjoy writing about is what you should base your blog off of. Many freelance writers do not include a blog on their personal website because they believe it is a waste of time and money. This is completely false in every way.

By creating a blog you are showcasing your writing skills to potential clients, as well as honing your writing skills. This also gives you something to discuss on social networking websites. Posting your own articles can show that you are actually putting time into your website and not just letting it sit and rot.

Gaining a following is also beneficial because it is a great way to spread your name amongst the freelance community. This is something that everyone should be excited about. Not only do people care about what we have to say, but they feel the need to share it with others.
